Pregnant travellers may generally be eligible for travel insurance coverage. However, in case you're travelling being pregnant the policy is designed to cover specific, unforeseen complications, not routine aspects of a normal pregnancy.
What might be covered?
-
Trip Cancellation or Curtailment: If you need to cancel or cut your trip short due to an unforeseen pregnancy or childbirth complication, the policy may reimburse you for unrecoverable travel and accommodation expenses. This can include pre-paid excursions, tours, or activities.
-
Emergency Medical Expenses Abroad: Should you experience a sudden and unforeseen pregnancy or childbirth complication during your trip outside the UK, your policy may cover necessary emergency medical costs up to the benefit limit. This includes expenses for infants born as a result of a covered complication.
What is not covered?
-
Normal Pregnancy and Childbirth: The policy explicitly does not cover costs related to normal pregnancy conditions or a normal childbirth that occurs during your trip.
-
Pre-existing Complications: The policy will not cover any claim for a pregnancy or childbirth complication that first arose before you booked the trip (for cancellation claims) or before you departed (for curtailment claims). Any known condition could be considered a pre-existing medical condition, which is not covered.
- Travelling Against Medical Advice: You are not covered if a medical practitioner has advised you against travelling.
Important information:
- Pregnancy itself is not a reason for denial of coverage.
- Always consult with your healthcare provider before planning a trip during pregnancy.
- Inform your doctor about your travel plans and any potential health concerns.
- Follow any recommendations or restrictions provided by your healthcare provider.
Are premature births considered complications of pregnancy?
Any premature births or threatened early labour more than 8 weeks (16 weeks in the case of twins, triplets or any other multiple pregnancy) prior to the expected delivery date would be considered complications of pregnancy.
What would do I need to potentially qualify for coverage?
-
- Have consulted a doctor about any health concerns that could affect your ability to travel.
- Not be traveling against medical advice.
