This part of your insurance provides up to £10,000,000 for necessary medical costs if you have a medical emergency while you are outside the UK. A medical emergency is a sudden and unexpected illness or injury that needs immediate medical treatment.
Important information:
- The cover is only valid outside the UK.
- The emergency must not be due to an excluded activity (e.g. skiing off piste without a guide, diving deeper than 18 meters deep without a qualification, ...).
- Contact Zurich Assist if you need urgent assistance.
- Always fill in the in-app or online claim form as soon as possible.
What should I do if I have a medical emergency outside the UK?
It's very important that you contact Zurich Assist as soon as reasonably possible on +44 (0) 20 8156 2610. This is a 24-hour service. You should try to call them if you fall ill or are seriously injured, if you need to go into hospital, or if the cost of your treatment is likely to be over £500.
How much can I claim for emergency medical expenses?
The most you can claim in total for a medical emergency is £10,000,000 per trip for all beneficiaries. In other words, if covered family members are part of the request for emergency medical expenses, the most you can claim in total remains £10,000,000.
What kind of medical expenses could be covered?
If you have a medical emergency outside the UK, this part of the insurance may pay for reasonable and necessary expenses such as:
- Medical practitioners' fees.
- Hospital costs.
- Medical treatments.
- Transportation to the nearest suitable hospital.
- Emergency dental treatment.
- Emergency repairs to dentures or artificial teeth for pain relief.
- Repatriation expenses.
- Necessary accommodation and travel costs related to medical treatment.
- Funeral costs or repatriation of mortal remains in case of death abroad.
You can check out which sports and activities may qualify for coverage during your trip.
What if I need to see a dentist urgently while abroad?
This part of the insurance can help with emergency dental treatment to relieve pain or make emergency repairs to dentures or artificial teeth so you can eat. There's a limit of up to £500 per claim for emergency dental treatment.
Is there a part of the claim I have to pay myself?
Yes, there is usually an excess of £50 that you need to pay for each claim under the Emergency Medical Expenses and Assistance section. However, if you are travelling in the European Union (excluding EEA and Switzerland) and the cost of your medical treatment is reduced because you used a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC), the excess might not apply. The same might apply if you use private health insurance.
Keep in mind
For medical emergencies, please call Zurich Assist for help. Then, always fill out the in-app or online claim form to submit a claim—even if you’re not sure whether it’s covered. That way, we can keep a clear record and take a closer look at your situation. Just remember to keep any relevant receipts or official documents, like a police report in case of theft, to help support your claim.
